Vestibular Physiotherapy

Dizziness and vertigo can make everyday things feel uncertain, from rolling over in bed to walking through a busy store. Vestibular physiotherapy finds the cause and helps you feel steady again.

About this service

What is vestibular physiotherapy?

Your vestibular system, in the inner ear, works with your eyes and body to keep you balanced. When it is not working well you might feel spinning, light-headedness, unsteadiness or motion sensitivity. Dizziness can also become more common through perimenopause and menopause.

Vestibular physiotherapy uses specific tests to find the source of your symptoms. Treatment may include repositioning maneuvers for BPPV, gaze and balance exercises and a gradual plan to get you back to normal activity.

We can help with

  • Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV)
  • Spinning with rolling over or looking up
  • Light-headedness and unsteadiness
  • Motion sensitivity
  • Balance problems and fear of falling
  • Dizziness after a concussion
  • Vestibular neuritis and labyrinthitis
  • Persistent postural-perceptual dizziness (PPPD)

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Many people with BPPV feel much better after one or two repositioning treatments. Other causes of dizziness usually need a few weeks of exercise.

You do not need a referral. If your dizziness is new and comes with other symptoms such as severe headache, weakness, numbness or trouble speaking, seek emergency care right away.

Bring a list of your medications and anyone who can drive you home if your symptoms are strong.
